Getting the ball rolling

Three weeks ago was third bimester exams in school (which meant no Orientation classes with me), so I had a lot of free time to plan and start forming a tentative curriculum. The week was mostly uneventful besides Friday when the kids had there exams in Phys. Ed. Each class performed a dance for about 10 mins...

On the Sunday following the week of exams we had our first Kermes. Kermes is an afternoon of activities the volunteers plan for the kids every other month (chaos is pretty much unavoidable). I choose to be in charge of the art competition in the comedor and we put down long sheets of paper and plates of paint for the kids. They would come running in, paint and then keep running outside to do other activities.

Proyecto Familiar is another one of the more fun responsibilities the volunteers have at NPH. Since many of the kids have siblings at NPH but do not get to see each other very often (if they are in different sections), the volunteers plan little projects so that siblings can spend afternoons together every once in a while. Each month every volunteer has a proyecto with two different families. My first proyecto was with a family of seven kids. Although it got off to a slow start...taking almost an hour to round up seven kids from seven different sections, it ended up being really fun. We walked to Parramos and bought fruit and then ate dinner and made fruit salad outisde on the porch of my house. They were a really fun family because they were all happy to see each other and laughing with each other most of the afternoon.
This weekend is the anniversary of the death of Padre Wasson, the founder of NPH. He started the organization by adopting one boy who had been caught stealing money from the poor box of a small church in Mexico. One week later, the judge sent him eight more homeless boys. Yesterday the kids honored Padre Wasson by doing community service areas surrounding the home. Some visited elderly homes in Antigua, some donated clothes in Parramos. My section came ready at 8am with their machetes and chopped weeds at a nearby orphanage almost 5 hours. Valuable lesson learned: I am not very handy with a machete.
Sunday activities- huge floating Globes made by each section of kids (most of which eventually burst into flames) and a bonfire afterward.
